They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean, not a concrete tank.
