Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Item Level

Item Luck

It simply gives the player a chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves and is therefore more valuable in the early game than later ones as most players prioritize more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be used to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop or constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limitations on how much success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. All items have a base success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by 5percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
