Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be used to upgrade weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, giving an added bonus or impact when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found as loot gathered by enemies or received from chests or missions. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before they are upgraded.

There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, add their names to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding an Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the case of upgrades for gathering tools when a player swaps one glyph with a different one the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials needed do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a few important items to maximize their impact rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across multiple items.
