Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item upgrading. Based on the type of upgrade it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

On PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are a few theories on how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth, and also that gems in sockets increase the item's overall value. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real item level.

This isn't the only factor that affects the level of an item. The location of where the item was dropped may change its stats. For example, it could add a level to the item's haste, or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However each Best item upgrade will include at least one stat in that range unless they are an exclusive item or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the likelihood of locating items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful for early game runs, because players tend to put the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each item level. Item Failure

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%..

The success of an upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an initial success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
