A buy robot vacuum cleaner vacuum is able to keep the floors clean enough to cut down on the frequency you have to manually vacuum. Look for one that offers an easy navigation, can clean corners and stairs, and has a large dust bin that needs emptying only every few times.

There are models that mop and charge on their own which can be essential for those who have children or pets. A majority of the top performers in our tests have great obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ a great option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but don't mind taking the time to empty their robot's trash bin when it fills up.

Both robots are proficient at picking up surface dirt on carpets and hard floors and can maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart map of your home to assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. However unlike the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we evaluated the i3+ does not have any obstacle-avoidance features which means it can be stuck on things like socks or power cords, and may have issues traversing transitions across surfaces, such as from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include clearing out any toys or clutter it may come across. It's also recommended to keep the bin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is low, it returns to its docking station and automatically emptying its dirt into the station's dust bin and continues cleaning the area where it left off. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes about three hours to recharge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in iRobot's flagship line and has the most up-to-date features. It has self-charging and self-navigating. But the most expensive robot vacuum significant feature is the self-emptying bin. This eliminates the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ can make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot with voice or through the app.

In our tests the i7+ performed faster and more maneuverable than our runner-up, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and reduces recurring cost.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room and vacuum an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. After connecting we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a world of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It is powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide fade-free power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives bristles of nylon that are stiff and deep into carpet to suck up large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction settings to suit the task at hand. It is able to quickly change from floor vacuum to handheld vacuum, and vice versa.

The model also comes with docks that charge to 100% in around 3.5 hours and provides an easy access to two attachments as well as the Wand clip. This is a huge improvement over earlier Dysons, which require a lengthy charge and are a pain to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its limited run time. As CR's tests have shown, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is a typical, not an exceptional, time for the battery-powered cordless vacuum. This is still enough to get rid of the majority of a typical-sized home, but not quite long enough to cover every area (though an additional run-through often can be effective). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a standard robot automatic vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have a lot of money to spend on a robot. It was able to pick up the majority of types of debris and sizes during our testing and often went over the same area multiple times to give an efficient clean. Its flat front end helps to get into corners and along the walls' edges, which is a nice touch.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it lacks the mapping capabilities of more sophisticated models such as our top picks such as the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. Because of this, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often is power-depleted before making it back to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 because it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation capabilities and can better move itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips and can be controlled using your smartphone's voice assistance. It also feels more sturdy and has a more powerful motor, and works better on floors that are bare and carpets with a low pile, as well as providing a wider array of features for automation.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

It didn't do very well in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than some of the other models we've tested which could be a deterrent for some buyers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that you can access through the app. You can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to keep track of your pets or the kids if you're away from home. The filter and the dust bin can be cleaned to make cleanup quick and easy. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with self-emptying clean stations, which helps to keep the robot's bin clear and improves suction power.

Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for flooring made of hard wood. The app also lets you to customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum with different colors, so you can easily tell which areas it's focused on or where it's gotten stuck.

The app allows you to manually steer the robot in the event of need. For example, my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that can cause confusion for other robots I've tried. However, the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border without registering it as a cliff. The ability to program a daily cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving convenience.
