Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as PvE damage and crit chance.

For instance a weapon that has the upgrade template that ends in % will take on 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the item's current level. The cost increases as the level of the item rises.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to provide an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be applied. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied multiple times or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's used on (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of that equipment using the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defence characteristics of the weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can also be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear, or by purchasing them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of the item will be revealed at the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even when they're not sure how much it will be improved following the reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be costly and there is a high risk that the item may become obsolete or even break if it fails; a unsuccessful upgrade could ruin Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items that double or even eliminate the possibility of failure, and some upgrades that offer the benefit of being reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of nodes within a radius, which includes any pre-existing affixes. Glyphs can be upgraded in numerous ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.

In the endgame you'll find that the Best item upgrade way to improve your equipment is to use Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and provide a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

Glyphs, the only upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and then replaced with no restrictions are the most commonly used. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and rebuilt by using the help of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Each Glyph has a specific range of values that it can improve a statistic by. The value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can choose to replace it with a Glyph with the same rank or higher rank, which will increase the value of the glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use and also through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt has the possibility of dropping one of the many Glyphs as well as some rare glyphs to be found as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Each Glyph will unlock a unique bonus that boosts a particular set of stat nodes that are within a radius of the Glyph. Depending on the Glyph, this will either be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

Glyphs increase the number of nodes connected to them, therefore it is best to put Glyphs in strategic locations on the Graph. This will increase the impact. Druids, for instance, should place their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They might be able to place them near their critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The item upgrade item system allows players to boost the effectiveness of certain items by introducing upgraded components. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has a level that determines the final stats. Upgraded items are able to be leveled up to a maximum of ilvl 385. Each item level requires different components, and upgrade Item costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or obtained from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level the item, and once enough points are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a new item of the same kind. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own bonus. This could be a drawback in that it could cause the item to become more expensive if you don't need it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens to do so. This will cause the item to be traded for a new one, with a level 1 base and a completely different set of bonuses. This can be beneficial however it should not be used frequently as it can waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled many times, increasing their value and giving players the ability to alter their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it gives an increase in power if the player is repeatedly in or exits water. It is possible to upgrade it several times, each time increasing the max roll by an increment of 10. This item is very useful in PvP. A well-rolled version could be worth up to 50x the value of its non-upgraded version.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the level of their available equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets above ilvl 385--by presenting the appropriate items and currency to an NPC who upgrades items. The upgrade of armor set pieces will also increase the defense base of the item upgrader kit, and upgrading weapon equipment will increase the base damage and the strength and dexterity required to match the requirements of the upgraded equipment.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear, which can have eight upgrades. Every time you upgrade a piece of equipment, it has a chance of failing. The failure rate increases when you exceed the maximum number. Failures can result in the item reverting back to its original state, requiring the player to pay more for materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the maximum amount of upgrades.

If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition the item will lose any bonus it earned, including crit chance and attack damage, as well as any other effects that are associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or speed of reload). However, the player can continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains an increase in crit chance it will be applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the item level upgrade's definition and the value is recomputed every time an upgrade is applied.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating as well as the number of upgrade slots. The upgrade cost for non-premium items is the same as the base value of the upgrade--for instance, a standard equipment item might have 5 upgrades with a cost of 25,600 Technology Points and a 4x Quality Improvement Chance--whereas hero grade items will come with an incredibly lower cost for each upgrade.
