Alexandr Wang

Alexandr Wang (born January 1997) is an American entrepreneur, artificial intelligence researcher, and billionaire. He is the founder of Scale AI, a data labeling and AI infrastructure company valued at $14 billion, which provides training data for machine learning models to major technology companies and the United States Department of Defense. In 2021, at age 24, Wang became the world's youngest self-made billionaire.

In June 2025, following Meta Platforms' $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, Wang transitioned to become Meta's Chief AI Officer while remaining on Scale AI's board of directors.

Early life and education

Wang was born in January 1997 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to Chinese immigrant parents who worked as weapons physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the facility famous for the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. His parents named him "Alexandr" (without the final "e") to align with Chinese numerology, as an eight-letter name is considered auspicious for wealth and prosperity.

Wang demonstrated exceptional aptitude for mathematics and computer programming from an early age. By age 15, he was already a proficient coder. His academic achievements included:

Career

Scale AI

In 2016, at age 19, Wang co-founded Scale AI with Lucy Guo, a product designer he had met at Quora. The company was incubated at Y Combinator, Silicon Valley's prominent startup accelerator. Scale AI focused on providing high-quality labeled training data for machine learning models - a critical but often overlooked component of AI development.

The company grew rapidly as the demand for AI training data exploded. Scale AI's clients came to include major technology companies such as Tesla, Waymo, OpenAI, Meta Platforms, Amazon, and Nvidia.

In May 2024, Scale AI secured $1 billion in funding from investors including Nvidia, Meta, Amazon, and Accel, bringing the company's valuation to $14 billion.

Defense contracts

Under Wang's leadership, Scale AI pursued contracts with the United States Department of Defense, including work with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. This decision was controversial in Silicon Valley, where many AI companies have historically avoided defense work.

Wang has described the decision as a "moral imperative," stating that a visit to China, where he observed AI companies working on facial recognition and surveillance, solidified his belief that the United States needed its best companies focused on defense AI. "At that moment it was clear for me that the US would need to have the highest quality human capital and the best companies focused on this problem," Wang said.

The defense contracts initially caused some fallout: investors expressed concerns, and some employees resigned due to the stigma associated with military work. Wang acknowledged that Scale AI became "a bit of a pariah" in certain Silicon Valley circles.

Meta Platforms

In June 2025, Meta Platforms purchased a 49% stake in Scale AI as part of a $14.3 billion investment. As a condition of the deal, Wang transitioned to become Meta's first-ever Chief AI Officer, stepping down as Scale AI's CEO while remaining on the company's board of directors.

At Meta, Wang leads the company's efforts to develop "superintelligent" AI systems, working directly with CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The Meta deal raised concerns among some officials in the Trump administration who privately called it a national security issue due to Scale's existing contracts with the Department of Defense. Google dropped Scale AI as a partner following the Meta deal, citing data-sharing concerns with a competitor.

Controversies

Labor practices and Department of Labor investigation

Scale AI has faced significant criticism over its labor practices, particularly regarding the treatment of data labeling workers. In 2025, the U.S. Department of Labor began investigating the company for potential violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The investigation examined allegations of unpaid wages, misclassification of workers as independent contractors rather than employees, and retaliation. The probe also extended to Scale AI's HR partners HireArt and Upwork.

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, 45 former and current Scale AI contractors detailed allegations of "wage theft" and "widespread labor abuses," calling for a Department of Labor investigation.

Lawsuits

Two lawsuits were filed against Scale AI - one in December 2024 and another in January 2025 - from former workers alleging they were underpaid and misclassified as contractors instead of employees, which denied them access to protections such as overtime pay and sick days. One lawsuit described Scale AI as "the sordid underbelly of the generative AI industry."

Scale AI has disputed the lawsuits, stating that it fully complies with the law and works to ensure its pay rates meet or exceed local living wage standards.

International labor concerns

In 2023, The Washington Post reported on low-paid gig workers, particularly in the Philippines, who labored to train AI systems for wages below minimum wage, often with no recourse when they were not paid. Scale AI has been associated with an industry that critics have accused of operating "digital sweatshops" in countries including Kenya, India, Pakistan, Venezuela, and Colombia.

Co-founder dispute

Wang's professional relationship with Scale AI co-founder Lucy Guo ended in a bitter legal dispute. Guo left the company and subsequently sued Wang for defamation. Details of the settlement have not been made public.
