Upgrades can increase the stats of a piece of gear and sometimes even its extras. The worth of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements, and the number of random augmentations applied.
The elite racial Shield Razortail, for example, is often upgraded to increase its lightning absorption function in PvP or add additional defenses to missile-based builds in the PvM. This makes it more tradeable over the original version that is not upgraded.
Reroll Tokens
Reroll tokens allow you to reroll a purchased item upgrading, like armor, weapon, or ring. The item level upgrade is replaced with another of the same kind however with different bonuses. Certain items benefit from upgrading not so much for their improved stats and more because it lets players get the most value from a flawless roll on the item. For example, a perfect-rolled 200/6 504 armor set piece is highly valued in the melee PvP community and can be worth 20-50 times the value of the unupp'd version.
When you select an upgrade component that you want to put into an item, the game will display an open window that displays the necessary requirements. The game will display the required requirements when you select an upgrade component to slot into an item.
Once you've met the required requirements for an upgrade the game will put the item in your inventory, and the progress bar will update to show how close to completing the upgrade. You can also check on the status of an upgrade by visiting any NPC that upgrades items.
