Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.

Using the item level can help players compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller can be done using the item's level.

On PC, you are able to view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the item level calculation is made. One theory suggests that the item level is determined by formulas that determine the value of an item's stats actually are. It considers the fact that various perks have different value, and also that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, because the level of the area the item is dropped into can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to a single weapon and to motivate them to try out other weapons. The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats of the item. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. For example, a grey or white Best item upgrader can only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.

Affixes can also be used to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and they come in all sizes and shapes. At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circles arrows. Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of those properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players the possibility to obtain better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading which increases with each item level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item, up to 140.

Moreover, certain items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be used to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.

The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading that item and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. All items have a base success rate of 25%, and every Best item upgrade with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above the items in the inventory. This may obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the item upgrader - talking to, CORE client config.
