Upgrades can boost the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.
If the weapon's upgrade template is %, it will increase 3% of its previous damage every time it's upgraded.
The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases with the item's level.
Components
Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons, and trinkets in order to provide an extra stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level for a component to be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade item component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of the equipment using less Upgrade Crystals than is required to reach the same upgrade level through normal methods.
A boost upgrade is a way to alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.
Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-tier version of the item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know how much it can be improved upon the reset.
The process of upgrading an item could be expensive and it's possible that the item will be obsolete or even break in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that can double or even eliminate possibility of failure, as well as a few upgrades that give a bonus when reinserted into an item.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets with special functions. Glyphs can boost the performance of nodes within a radius, and include any existing affixes. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.
In the endgame, you will often find that the Best item upgrade way to improve your gear is by placing Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and offer an enormous boost to your power on the Paragon Board.
Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced but Glyphs are the only upgrade component that can be removed and replaced without restriction. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and replaced using the help of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.
The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with an Glyph that is the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.
There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use and also through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt has the chance of dropping one of the various Glyphs and there are some rare Glyphs that can be found in the form of drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.
Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs, you will have to put them on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a special bonus that boosts a specific set of stat nodes that are within the radius of the Glyph. Depending on the Glyph, this will either be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.
Using a Glyph will boost all nodes that are linked to it, so it is recommended to position your Glyphs close to key nodes on the Graph to maximise the impact. For example an Druid should aim to place their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes, but you should also consider placing them near critical damage nodes too.
Leveling
The upgrade system of items allows players to boost the power of certain items by inserting upgraded components. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has a level that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be upgraded to a maximum of ilvl 385. Each level of an item requires a different amount of components, and the upgrade costs increase as the item gets upgraded.
Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab of the crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to upgrading an item. Once enough points are earned, you will be able to claim the upgrade item and receive its additional bonuses.
When a player upgrade a piece of equipment, the base item will be replaced by the new item. The same armor will be upgraded to a weapon or a shield when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own bonus. This can be a downside in that the item could increase in price even if you don't require it.
The upgrades to items can be rerolled, provided that the player has enough tokens in order to do so. The item will be replaced with an entirely new item that is based on a level 1 base and totally different bonuses. This can be useful, but should not be used frequently as it can be a waste of resources.
Some upgrades can be rerolled multiple times which increases their value and allows the player to modify their gear. An excellent example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an increase in power when a player repeatedly enters and exits water (or does not swim as dolphins). This can be upgraded several times, each time raising the max roll by a factor of 10. This item can be extremely valuable in PvP as the Best item upgrade version of it can be worth between 20 and 50 times its value if it is not upgraded.
Requirements
The ability to upgrade items allows players to increase the level of their available equipment--armor, weapons, and trinkets above ilvl 385--by offering the appropriate items and currency to an NPC that upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces improve the strength of their base defense and weapon upgrades items increase their base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity.
All items can be upgraded up to five times except for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Every time you upgrade a piece of equipment, it has a chance of failing. The failure rate increases as you go over the maximum number. Failures will result in the item reverting back to its original state, requiring the player to pay more for materials than they would had they stopped upgrading at the highest number of upgrades.
If an item isn't upgraded, the experience bar in the bar for growth will be reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it has gained like the chance to crit, attack damage, or other effects (such as increased heal over time or reloading speed). The player can continue to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.
When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to highest. This means that, if a weapon gains an increase in its crit chance, the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute called Slots has been added to the item definition and the value is computed each time an upgrade is applied.
The amount of resources required to upgrade an item upgrader is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading equipment that is not premium is equal to the value of the base item. For instance an item that is commonplace could have five upgrades at a cost. 25600 Technology Points 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items have lower costs per upgrade.
Premium items could have different upgrade requirements from standard gear. For example, they may need less sowels, however they may require more minerals and orons. Whatever the case, players will need to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine with each piece of equipment they wish to upgrade. In addition to the upgrade costs listed above, each upgrade will require the use of different ingredients for upgrading.
