José Ignacio Sánchez Galán (born September 30, 1950) is a Spanish business executive who has served as Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, the multinational electric utility company, since 2006. Under his leadership, Iberdrola has become one of the world's largest utilities and a global leader in renewable energy, supplying electricity to over 100 million people across dozens of countries.

Galán has invested more than €140 billion in renewable energies, smart grids, energy storage, and green hydrogen since joining Iberdrola. He has been recognized by Harvard Business Review as one of the five most important CEOs in the world (2019) and by Time magazine as one of the most relevant leaders in fighting climate change (2023). He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014.

Early life and education

José Ignacio Sánchez Galán was born on September 30, 1950, in Salamanca, in the Castile and León region of northwestern Spain. As a young man, he moved to Madrid to pursue his education.

Galán studied industrial engineering at the ICAI School of Engineering, attached to Comillas Pontifical University. He also graduated in business administration from the ICADE Business School and obtained a degree in Business Administration and Foreign Trade from the EOI Business School.

He speaks English, French, and Italian in addition to his native Spanish.

Career

Early career

Galán began his professional career at Sociedad Española del Acumulador Tudor, where he held various executive and management positions. He played a key role in the company's international expansion.

Aerospace industry

He led Industria de Turbopropulsores (ITP) from its inception, driving the design, manufacture, and maintenance of aviation engines and gas turbines. Galán integrated workers and technicians from the restructuring of the naval sector in the Ría de Bilbao into the ITP workforce.

Between 1993 and 1995, Galán served as Chairman of Eurojet, the European consortium for the development and manufacture of the Eurojet EJ200 engine, which powers the Eurofighter Typhoon military aircraft.

Telecommunications: Airtel

In 1995, Galán joined the newly created Airtel Móvil as CEO. Under his executive leadership, the company achieved 5 million customers, becoming a major competitor in Spain's mobile telecommunications market.

Galán left Airtel in 2001 after securing its sale to Vodafone for €24 billion - an exit that multiplied the initial investment of its founders by 31 times. This successful sale established his reputation as a deal-maker and business builder.

Iberdrola (2001-present)

In 2001, Galán was appointed Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Iberdrola. In 2006, he was elevated to Executive Chairman, the position he holds today.

Since his arrival, Galán has transformed Iberdrola into a global energy company through aggressive international expansion and a strategic focus on renewable energy:

  • International expansion: Iberdrola is now present in dozens of countries and supplies energy to more than 100 million people
  • Renewable investment: More than €140 billion invested in renewable energies, smart grids, energy storage, and green hydrogen
  • Acquisitions: Acquired Scottish Power (2007), making Galán its Chairman; acquired significant US assets through Avangrid; expanded into Brazil through Neoenergia

Personal life

Galán is married and has four children. He maintains relative privacy regarding his family life. His wife's name is not publicly disclosed.

Controversies

Corporate espionage investigation

In June 2021, Spain's National Court formally named Galán and three other current or former Iberdrola executives as suspects in a corporate espionage case. The investigation cited their alleged involvement in bribery, falsification of documents, and violation of privacy.

The case was connected to former Spanish police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo, who allegedly conducted surveillance operations on politicians and businessmen while working in the National Police Force. Galán's indictment was linked to several projects allegedly carried out by Villarejo through the Cenyt Group between 2004 and 2009.

In June 2022, Spain's High Court closed the investigation into Galán's alleged role, citing the statute of limitations. The judge approved the dismissal of charges against him for crimes of continuous active bribery, crime against privacy, and continuous crime of falsification of commercial documents.

Lawsuit against journalists

In February 2022, Iberdrola sued Titania Compañía Editorial (which owns the investigative news website El Confidencial) and three of their journalists for €17.5 million for allegedly waging a media campaign to harass, discredit, and defame Galán. The lawsuit amount equaled approximately 70% of the website's annual turnover.

El Confidencial's investigation had contributed to Villarejo's arrest and indictment on charges of blackmail and corruption, and to the opening of investigations into the Iberdrola group. Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) condemned the lawsuit as a "gag lawsuit" and called on the Spanish government to provide protective legislation for media.

Mexico electricity disputes

Iberdrola has faced significant challenges in Mexico under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's energy policies, which favored state-owned utility CFE over private generators. Galán publicly criticized Mexico's electricity law changes and warned the country faced potential lawsuits over the legislation.
