Muller was born in Nieuwer-Amstel, Netherlands, on 30 March 1961. He earned a master's degree in business economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam.

In October 2013, Muller succeeded Pierre-Olivier Beckers as president and CEO of the company, then known as Delhaize Group. In 2015, Ahold agreed to acquire it for 9.3 billion euros. Once the merger was completed in July 2016, Muller became deputy CEO of the newly formed group.

Assessment
Muller's advancement from junior logistics and wholesale postings to the leadership of one of Europe's largest food retail groups reflects a long, specialised career built within a single sector. Senior roles at Metro AG preceded his appointment to run the company that became Ahold Delhaize. His tenure has been marked chiefly by continuity: Muller led the business through its 2016 merger, served as deputy CEO of the combined group, and then succeeded Dick Boer as CEO, sustaining an executive career at the same corporate group for more than a decade. Muller also took on an external governance role, chairing the board of the Vlerick Business School for six years before being succeeded there in 2025. The available sources record no controversy or public criticism attached to his leadership; as documented, his record consists of successive senior appointments and the completion of one major corporate merger.
