Thomas Schinecker is an Austrian and German pharmaceutical executive who has served as chief executive officer of the Roche Group, the Swiss pharmaceutical and diagnostics company, since 14 March 2023.[1] He succeeded Severin Schwan, who moved from the chief executive role to become chairman of its board of directors on the same day.[2]

Schinecker spent his entire executive career inside Roche, joining the company as a management trainee in 2003 and rising through two decades of marketing, general management and divisional leadership roles in Austria, Sweden, the United States and Germany before being appointed chief executive of Roche Diagnostics in 2019.[3] As head of that division, Schinecker oversaw its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the development of a rapid at-home antigen test that received United States Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorisation in December 2021.[4]

Since becoming group chief executive, Schinecker has led the company through a series of pharmaceutical acquisitions, including the 2023 purchase of Telavant for $7.1 billion upfront and the 2024 to 2025 tender offer for Poseida Therapeutics, while overseeing growth in the company's core earnings and consecutive annual dividend increases.[5][6][7] He is also, as of 2026, president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA), a member of the board of directors of Chugai Pharmaceutical, and chair of the Biopharmaceutical CEOs Roundtable.[8][9]

Schinecker is of German and Austrian nationality and has three children.[10]

Early life and education

Schinecker's father was Austrian and his mother German.[11] His father worked for the Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB for 36 years, mainly in Asia, and Schinecker's parents lived in Asia for 23 years.[12]

At the age of 19, Schinecker began studying genetics at the University of Salzburg in Austria, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1997.[13] He then moved to the United States to continue his studies as a molecular biologist at New York University, where he received a Master of Science degree in 2000 and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in molecular biology in 2003.[14]

Career

Management trainee and early diagnostics roles, 2003 to 2011

Schinecker joined the Roche Group in 2003 as a management trainee, rotating through assignments in Singapore, Basel, Vienna and Mannheim as part of the company's internal development programme.[15] In 2005 he moved into the diagnostics side of the business, becoming Head of Marketing and Sales for the Austrian diagnostics unit, a post he held until 2008.[16] From 2008 to 2011 Schinecker served as general manager of the diagnostics business in Sweden.[17]

United States and Germany, 2011 to 2019

Between 2011 and 2013, Schinecker led the lifecycle of its sequencing solutions business from the company's facilities in Connecticut in the United States, a two-year posting that put him at the centre of its genomic sequencing strategy.[18] From 2013 to 2017 Schinecker held general manager roles in Germany across its diagnostics and holding companies.[19] In 2018 he was named global head of Roche Diagnostics Centralized and Point of Care Solutions, a position he held until 2019.[20]

Chief executive officer, Roche Diagnostics, 2019 to 2022

Schinecker was appointed chief executive officer of Roche Diagnostics, based in Rotkreuz, Switzerland, in 2019, and joined the company's Corporate Executive Committee that year.[21] Schinecker rose to head of the diagnostics division shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and led it through the pandemic response.[22] On 24 December 2021, the FDA granted emergency use authorisation to its at-home rapid COVID-19 antigen test, allowing it to be sold over the counter in US pharmacies from January 2022.[23] The nasal-swab test delivered results in about 20 minutes and detected known coronavirus variants of concern, including Omicron; the company said it had the manufacturing capacity to produce tens of millions of tests a month.[24] Commenting on the authorisation, Schinecker said the pandemic continued to "shed light on the ... role that rapid self-testing plays" in protecting individual and community health.[25] The self-test had already been in wide use in Switzerland since the spring of 2021.[26]

Interim chief executive of Roche Pharmaceuticals, January to March 2023

In January 2023, Schinecker was named interim chief executive of the Roche Pharmaceuticals division, ahead of his move to the top group role.[27] His appointment as full-time group chief executive had been announced the previous July, when Roche said Severin Schwan would step down as chief executive to become chairman.[28]

Chief executive officer, Roche Group, since March 2023

Schinecker became chief executive officer of the Roche Group on 14 March 2023, the same day Severin Schwan was elected chairman of the board with 98.32 per cent shareholder approval at the company's annual general meeting.[29] The same meeting saw Christoph Franz depart as chairman and the election of two new board members, Akiko Iwasaki and Mark Schneider.[30] On taking over, Schinecker said that its combination of pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and digitalisation gave the company an "unsurpassed position" in helping patients get diagnosed as quickly as possible.[31]

He inherited a company whose share price had stagnated after a series of clinical setbacks, and analysts framed his central task as reviving the company's pipeline and restoring investor confidence.[32] Schinecker said the company planned to keep research and development spending at roughly CHF 15 billion for the year, underlining a strategy of investing through the transition rather than cutting costs.[33]

Since 2023, Schinecker has overseen a run of acquisitions aimed at rebuilding the company's late-stage pharmaceutical pipeline (detailed below), alongside continued growth in the diagnostics business. As of 2026 he remains chief executive of Roche Group and a member of its Corporate Executive Committee.[34]

Leadership and management style

Colleagues and profile writers have described Schinecker as a disciplined, low-key manager who rose to the top job through two decades of internal operating roles rather than external hires or lateral moves, a route the company's own leadership materials present as central to his credibility inside it.[35] On the day his appointment as chief executive took effect, Schinecker marked the occasion not with a celebration but with a 45-minute spinning class at his local gym, a detail cited by the Swiss business magazine Bilanz as characteristic of his health-conscious, understated personal style.[36] The same profile described him as family-oriented, returning home to his children after work commitments rather than extending his working day socially.[37]

Publicly, Schinecker has described the company's strategy as one of pipeline depth rather than deal-making urgency. Discussing acquisition strategy in July 2026, he said its late-stage pipeline was "so full" that adding another late-stage asset would force the company to work out "how to reallocate more money," and said Roche did not feel the same acquisition pressure as rivals facing looming patent expiries.[38] Schinecker said the company did not have its "back against the wall" on deal-making, distinguishing the company's position from peers pursuing more aggressive mergers and acquisitions during 2026.[39]

On workforce management, Schinecker told the Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag in late December 2024 that the company had no plans for layoffs and that headcount was "constant to slightly increasing," while acknowledging setbacks in cancer drug development and describing Europe, particularly Germany, as needing more time to recover economically compared with the United States.[40] Schinecker said its research and development budget remained stable despite the setbacks, and that the weight-loss medicine programme was targeting a launch around 2029 or potentially earlier.[41]

Major deals and strategic decisions

Telavant acquisition, October 2023

On 23 October 2023, Roche announced it would acquire Telavant Holdings from Roivant Sciences and Pfizer for $7.1 billion upfront plus a $150 million near-term milestone payment, gaining United States and Japan development and commercialisation rights to RVT-3101 (later named afimkibart), a TL1A-directed antibody for inflammatory bowel disease.[42] The company cited phase 2b trial data showing 36 per cent clinical remission and 50 per cent endoscopic improvement at week 56 with monthly subcutaneous dosing.[43] Schinecker said the antibody had "the transformational potential to make a significant difference for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease," and pledged its commitment to bringing the therapy to patients quickly.[44]

LumiraDx point-of-care acquisition, December 2023

On 29 December 2023, Roche announced a definitive agreement to acquire the point-of-care diagnostics technology of LumiraDx, paying $295 million upfront with up to a further $55 million to fund the business through closing, which took place in mid-2024.[45] The acquisition, made under Schinecker's tenure as group chief executive, gave the company a platform capable of running multiple diagnostic tests, including immunoassay and clinical chemistry, on a single instrument for decentralised healthcare settings, complementing its existing centralised diagnostics business.[46]

Poseida Therapeutics acquisition, November 2024 to 2025

Roche entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Poseida Therapeutics, a cell therapy company with an allogeneic CAR-T platform, on 26 November 2024, describing the deal as intended to "enhance our combined expertise, unlock new possibilities and pave the way for first-in-class therapies" in oncology and cell therapy.[47] Under the terms disclosed in its tender offer filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company paid $9.00 per share in cash plus a non-tradeable contingent value right of up to $4.00 per share tied to future milestones.[48] Roche had already been collaborating with Poseida on non-viral, allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy programmes, including P-CD19CD20-ALLO1 and P-BCMA-ALLO1, since 2022.[49]

Pipeline strategy

Rather than pursuing further large acquisitions, Schinecker has pointed to the company's internal pipeline as its principal growth driver, citing 19 investigational medicines with the potential to launch by 2030.[50] Assets he highlighted as each forecast to exceed $3 billion in peak annual sales include the obesity therapies petrelintide and enicepatide, the Alzheimer's disease drug trontinemab, and the breast cancer therapy giredestrant.[51]

Financial and market performance

At the time Schinecker took over as group chief executive in March 2023, Roche had 103,613 employees worldwide.[52] The company's share price had stagnated in the period leading up to Schinecker's appointment, following a series of clinical trial setbacks in its pharmaceutical pipeline, and had continued to decline from a peak reached in April 2022.[53][54]

For the 2024 financial year, the company reported group sales of CHF 60.5 billion, up 7 per cent at constant exchange rates and 3 per cent in Swiss francs, with core operating profit of CHF 20.8 billion, up 14 per cent at constant exchange rates.[55] IFRS net income fell 19 per cent at constant exchange rates to CHF 9.2 billion, a decline the company attributed to CHF 3.2 billion in goodwill impairment charges related to its earlier acquisitions of Flatiron Health and Spark Therapeutics.[56] Core earnings per share were CHF 18.80, and the board proposed a dividend of CHF 9.70 per share, the company's 38th consecutive annual increase.[57] Announcing the results, Schinecker said 2024 had been "a strong year for Roche," pointing to Group sales growth of 9 per cent in the fourth quarter, the third consecutive quarter of what he called positive momentum.[58]

For the 2025 financial year, the company reported group sales of CHF 61.5 billion, up 7 per cent at constant exchange rates and 2 per cent in Swiss francs, with core operating profit of CHF 21.8 billion, up 13 per cent at constant exchange rates.[59] IFRS net income rose 58 per cent at constant exchange rates to CHF 13.8 billion, and core earnings per share rose 11 per cent at constant exchange rates to CHF 19.46.[60] The board proposed a dividend of CHF 9.80 per share, the company's 39th consecutive annual increase.[61] Schinecker described 2025 as "a strong year for Roche, reflecting our continued focus on operational and R&D excellence," and pointed to "significant momentum" across the pharmaceutical pipeline.[62]

As of 2026, the company employed more than 100,000 people worldwide, treated 39 million patients with its medicines in 2025, and delivered 31 billion diagnostic tests worldwide.[63]

Board memberships and outside roles

Schinecker sits on the Innovation Advisory Board of Labor Berlin, the joint diagnostics venture of the Charité and Vivantes hospital groups, a position he has held since 2020.[64] He became vice president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) in 2022.[65] On 26 November 2024, IFPMA announced that Schinecker would succeed Albert Bourla, chairman and chief executive of Pfizer, as its president effective 1 January 2025.[66] On taking up the role, Schinecker said he was "excited about the potential of medical innovation to transform healthcare and meet the challenges we face today."[67] As part of the same leadership transition, Rob Davis of MSD was named IFPMA vice president and Sunao Manabe of Daiichi Sankyo was extended as vice president.[68]

Since 2025, Schinecker has chaired the Biopharmaceutical CEOs Roundtable (BCR), and he was elected to the board of directors of Chugai Pharmaceutical, a Japanese drugmaker majority owned by Roche, the same year.[69] He has also served on the foundation board of the IMD Business School and the foundation board of the Lucerne Festival since 2024.[70]

Personal life

Schinecker is of German and Austrian nationality; his mother was German and his father Austrian.[71] He has three children, and told the Tages-Anzeiger in March 2023 that when he was at home, on weekends or on holiday, he spent his time largely with his family.[72] By March 2023 he had lived in Switzerland for more than five years, after 20 years working for Roche.[73] Profile coverage of his appointment as group chief executive described him as prioritising time with his children over after-work socialising.[74] Asked about his interests outside work, Schinecker said he was a team sports player who enjoyed "all kinds of ball sports, including basketball, volleyball or squash," adding that he found more enjoyment playing with others than alone.[75]
