Jacek Krawiec, born Dariusz Jacek Krawiec (born 23 September 1967 in Kołobrzeg), is a Polish economist and businessman. He served as President of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer of PKN Orlen from 2008 to 2015.
Before joining PKN Orlen, Krawiec held senior positions at several Polish and international companies, including Impexmetal, Elektrim and Action SA. Since leaving PKN Orlen, he has been detained and investigated on suspicion of financial mismanagement and, separately, of bribing a former government minister.
Early life and education
Krawiec was born on 23 September 1967 in Kołobrzeg. He graduated in 1992 from the Poznań University of Economics, where he studied the economics and organisation of foreign trade.
Career
Early career (1992 to 1998)
From 1992 to 1997, Krawiec worked at Bank Pekao SA, Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In 1998, he was responsible for the Polish market at the London branch of the Japanese investment bank Nomura.
Impexmetal, Elektrim and other companies (1998 to 2008)
From 1998 to 2002, Krawiec was president of the management board and chief executive of Impexmetal. In 2002, he became president of the management board of Elektrim. From 2003 to 2004, he was managing director of Sindicatum Ltd in London, and from 2006 to 2008 he was president of the management board of Action SA.
During this period, Krawiec chaired the supervisory boards of Huta Aluminium Konin, Metalexfrance in Paris, S and I SA in Lausanne, and ce-market.com. He also served on the supervisory boards of Impexmetal, Elektrim, Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa, Elektrim Telekomunikacja, Elektrim Magadex, Elektrim Volt and PTE AIG.
PKN Orlen (2008 to 2015)
Krawiec joined the management board of PKN Orlen as vice-president on 7 June 2008. On 18 September 2008, he was appointed president of the management board and chief executive of the company. In connection with taking up the presidency, he became chairman of the supervisory board of Unipetrol, PKN Orlen's Czech refining subsidiary, on 11 December 2008.
Krawiec was removed from the presidency of PKN Orlen on 16 December 2015. He was succeeded by Wojciech Jasiński.
Legal proceedings (2019 to 2020)
On 12 February 2019, Krawiec was detained on suspicion of an offence of mismanagement on a large scale. He was detained again by Poland's Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) on 4 September 2019, when the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Łódź expanded the charges against him. In September 2020, he was detained once more by the CBA, this time in connection with a case against former minister Sławomir Nowak. Prosecutors suspected Krawiec of having paid Nowak bribes totalling several hundred thousand złoty in exchange for help in securing lucrative positions.
Personal life
Krawiec is the brother of Małgorzata Bochenek, who worked in the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński until July 2010.
Assessment
Over roughly two decades, Krawiec advanced from banking and consulting roles into the leadership of several of Poland's largest industrial firms, culminating in seven years as chief executive of PKN Orlen, the country's largest company. His time there ended with his removal from the board in December 2015. In the years that followed, he was repeatedly detained and investigated, first on suspicion of large-scale mismanagement and later on suspicion of bribing a former government minister to help him obtain senior positions. The sources available describe detentions, expanded charges and suspicions rather than a finalised conviction, and the allegations against him should be read as unresolved.
