Igor Adam Chalupec (born 29 May 1966 in Warsaw) is a Polish economist, lawyer and businessman. He is best known for serving as president of the management board of PKN Orlen, Poland's largest company, from 2004 to 2007, following earlier senior roles at Bank Pekao and at Poland's Ministry of Finance. After leaving Orlen, Chalupec founded the advisory and private equity firm Icentis Capital and later led the newsagent distribution company Ruch S.A.
Alongside his business career, Chalupec has spent decades active in international bridge administration and in Warsaw's Evangelical community, and he holds a licensed securities broker's credential dating back to 1991.
Early life and education
Chalupec was born in Warsaw in 1966. According to an account of the family's history, his grandfather was Slovak; before the First World War two brothers named Chalupiec, Jerzy and Paweł, emigrated from Slovakia to Lipno in the Dobrzyń region of Poland. Jerzy's daughter Apolonia Chalupiec later became an actress known by the stage name Pola Negri, making her a distant relative of Chalupec. Paweł, the other brother, settled in Warsaw; his son Adam was Chalupec's father, a Warsaw editor who founded and for many years edited the monthly magazine Żivot.
In 1991 Chalupec graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Trade at the Warsaw School of Economics with a master's degree in economics. In 1992 he graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw with a master's degree in law and administration. He also completed further professional training courses in banking, finance and international law.
As a child, Chalupec appeared in two episodes of the Polish television series Dziewczyna i chłopak (Girl and Boy) in 1977, and in a film of the same title three years later.
Career
Early career and Bank Pekao (1989 to 2003)
Chalupec began his career as a consultant at the consulting firm Polexpert sp. z o.o. from 1989 to 1990. He has held a securities broker's licence (No. 45) since 1991. From 1991 to 1995 he was the founding director of the Central Brokerage House (Centralny Dom Maklerski) of Bank Pekao SA, and from 1993 to 1994 he served as a member, then from 1994 to 1995 as chairman, of the Polish Self-Government of Brokerage Houses.
From 1995 to 2003 Chalupec was a member of the management board of Bank Pekao SA, becoming vice-president from 2000. His responsibilities there covered investment banking and asset management, treasury operations, capital investments, brokerage activities, custodial operations and investor relations, as well as corporate banking and the financing of investment projects. Chalupec helped design and carry out the consolidation and merger of the Pekao group, and he oversaw the bank's privatisation, including its public share offering and the sale of a stake to a strategic investor. Within the bank he also chaired its Credit Committee from 1997 to 2003 and sat on its Asset and Liability Management Committee from 1995 to 2003. During the same period, Chalupec was a member of the Council of the Warsaw Stock Exchange from 1995 to 2003.
Ministry of Finance (2003 to 2004)
From 2003 to 2004 Chalupec was undersecretary of state at Poland's Ministry of Finance, where he also served as General Inspector of Financial Information and as National Authorising Officer. On behalf of the ministry, Chalupec coordinated matters connected with Poland's accession to the European Union. During this period he was a member of the Commission for Banking Supervision, the Commission for Insurance and Pension Funds Supervision, and the European Financial Committee in Brussels.
President of PKN Orlen (2004 to 2007)
Chalupec was president of the management board of PKN Orlen from 1 October 2004 to 18 January 2007. Under his leadership, the company pursued merger talks with the Hungarian firm MOL in 2005 that, had they succeeded, would have created one of the largest energy groups in Central Europe; the talks collapsed amid political disagreements between the two countries. The achievement his own biography credits to his presidency was the takeover of the Lithuanian refinery AB Mažeikių Nafta, now known as Orlen Lietuva. That deal, completed in 2006, saw the company acquire an 84.3 per cent stake, bought partly from the Russian firm Yukos and partly from the Lithuanian government, and it made the company the largest in Central Europe at the time. The refinery was damaged by a fire in October 2006, which was reported to have cost around 75 million US dollars, shortly before the takeover was completed. Chalupec's presidency ended in January 2007.
Icentis and Ruch S.A. (2007 to 2018)
After leaving the presidency, Chalupec founded the financial advisory firm Icentis Corporate Solutions and the private equity firm Icentis Capital in 2008. In 2007 he advised on a number of mergers and acquisitions, including advising Jarosław Pawluk on the sale of the CTL Logistics transport holding. In 2010 Chalupec worked with the American hedge fund Eton Park on its purchase of a controlling stake in Ruch S.A., the Polish newsagent and press distribution company, with his firm Icentis Capital overseeing the investment on Eton Park's behalf.
In 2013 Chalupec became president of the management board of Ruch S.A. He resigned from that position on 9 October 2018, under an agreement with Alior Bank concerning the company's restructuring.
Later board roles
Chalupec has sat on the supervisory board of the construction group Budimex from 2007 to 2026. He previously sat on the supervisory board of Bank Handlowy w Warszawie from 2009 to 2021.
Public and sporting activities
Chalupec is a member of the Polish Business Council (Polska Rada Biznesu). He has been vice-president and treasurer of the Polish Sport Bridge Association since 2012 and was elected to a fourth term in 2025. From 2018 Chalupec has served on the executive committee and as treasurer of the European Bridge League, becoming its first vice-president in 2025 and being re-elected to that post in 2026. He has been a member of the executive committee of the World Bridge Federation since 2023 and became its honorary secretary in 2026. He also sits on the programme council of the Economic Forum in Karpacz.
Chalupec is himself an active competitive bridge player holding the title of WBF World Master. He won a bronze medal with the team SV Bridge Club at the 2025 Open European Championships in Poznań, and a silver medal with the same team in the Jacek Pszczoła Swiss Cup at the 2026 Open World Championships in Katowice.
Chalupec is the founder and chairman of the council of the Evangelical Educational Society Foundation (Fundacja Ewangelickie Towarzystwo Oświatowe), which runs two Warsaw schools, the S.B. Linde Primary School and the "Szkrabki" kindergarten, continuing educational traditions of Warsaw's pre-war Evangelical community. Since 2017 Chalupec has served as curator, or vice-president of the parish council, of the Evangelical-Augsburg Parish of the Holy Trinity in Warsaw.
Honours and awards
Chalupec was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit by the President of Poland in 2015 and the Star of the Millennium of Lithuania in 2008. He received the Manager Award in 2010, described as recognising a rescue mission that saved Poland's largest press distribution company, the Lesław Paga Award in 2007 for setting standards in Polish economic life, the Wektor award of the Confederation of Polish Employers in 2006 for entrepreneur of the year, and the Hermes award of the Warsaw Stock Exchange Council in 1996 for his contribution to rebuilding the Polish capital market.
Publications
Chalupec co-wrote, with Cezary Filipowicz, the book Rosja Ropa Polityka (Russia Oil Politics), published in 2009.
Assessment
Chalupec's career combines two distinct strands: two decades at the centre of Polish banking, finance and state administration, and a comparatively short, high-profile spell running the country's largest company. His tenure at PKN Orlen lasted just over two years, but according to the company's own account it delivered its largest single investment at the time, the Mažeikių Nafta takeover, which extended the company's reach into Lithuania and briefly made it the largest company in Central Europe. His presidency also saw a costlier setback: an attempted merger with MOL that collapsed for political reasons, and a refinery fire reported to have caused tens of millions of dollars in losses shortly before the Lithuanian deal closed.
After leaving the Orlen presidency, Chalupec moved from running a large state-linked company to advisory and private equity work, and later took on the more modest task of running Ruch S.A., a company he left as part of a restructuring agreement rather than at an obvious high point. Chalupec's long-running roles in bridge administration at the European and world level, and in Warsaw's Evangelical community, point to a public profile that extends well beyond corporate management, and distinguish him from many of his contemporaries in Polish state-linked business leadership.
